We're now up to the 6th instalment of Betwixt & Between tapes, and for this one we're welcoming Ryan Eyers on the B-side. Ryan is a Berlin based drummer, presenter on the occasional Nok Nok radio show, and organiser of the Lampenfieber reading and performance nights, at which the Betwixt & Between 6 launch was held in early February.

Jacken Elswyth opens with a rendition of Lone Prairie, from the old-time fiddler and folk scholar Jon Bekoff. The repeating tune is given space to breathe, occupying half of this first side as drones build around it. Those drones continue, forming a backdrop for the Caravan, a song by the Welsh borders singer and song carrier Mark Stevenson. This gives way to an improvised piece for amplified banjo, playing with the metallic ring and sustain of overdrive. Side A finishes with a shorter improvisation for acoustic banjo.

On the reverse, Ryan Eyers has contributed five short sketches for solo kit drums. The first arises from a pulsating cymbal bath, easing us in and gradually layering complexity and urgency to a rolling crescendo. The second strips back to a set of shuffled variations on a single repeating figure. The third jumps in with loose-rattling snare and layers on a journey across the cymbals, adding hi-hat snips and gong-like crash by turns. The fourth is more languid, almost coming to a halt as it rolls across the floor tom – and then rolling on again. And the close makes excellent use of precisely tuned toms to bring us to a tuneful close.

The Betwixt & Between 6 mascot is a manticore: a Persian man-eater, with a human face atop a lion's body. The cover image is adapted (like so many of the Betwixt & Between creatures) from the manticore featured on the Hereford Mappa Mundi.
